New cards

Define diffusion

Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to low concentration.

2
New cards

Where does diffusion only happen?

Only on fluids

3
New cards

How should it be if you want the distribution be equilibrium

The molecules must have an equal amount of molecules inside the cell membrane as-well on the outside of the cell membrane.

4
New cards

Define osmosis

The diffusion of small molecules of a solvent through a partially permeable membrane .

5
New cards

What is partially permeable?

When the membrane only allows very small molecules like water to pass through it

6
New cards

What is turgid?

When water of a very small solvent enters a plant cell and pushes on the cell wall causing the cell to swell.

7
New cards

What is plasmolysed?

A cell that shrinks and pulls away from the cell wall.

8
New cards

CELL WALL IS PERMEABLE ( ALLOWS ALL SIZE MOLECULES PASS THROUGH IT ) WHILST THE CELL MEMBRANE ONLY IS PARTIALLY PERMEABLE

9
New cards

What is concentration gradient?

When there is a higher concentration of molecules on the left/right of the membrane then the right/left side.

10
New cards

What is active transport?

the process where cells move molecules across their membranes, against the concentration gradient, from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration - requires energy which are unlike to osmosis and diffusion as they are passive processes - don’t require energy.
