Body Condition Scoring (BCS)
A scale for cattle ranging from 1 to 9 indicating the condition of the animal.
Score 1
Severely emaciated. Bone structure is sharp to the touch and easily visible with little evidence of fat deposits or muscling.
Score 2
Emaciated. Slight evidence of fat deposits and some muscling in the hindquarters.
Score 3
Very thin. No fat on ribs or brisket, and some muscle is still visible.
Score 4
Thin. Ribs are easily visible, but shoulders and hindquarters still show fair muscling.
Score 5
Moderate to thin. The last two or three ribs can be seen with little evidence of fat deposits.
Score 6
Good smooth appearance throughout with some fat deposits present.
Score 7
Very good flesh. Brisket is full with thick and spongy fat cover.
Score 8
Obese, with a very square shape and heavy fat pockets present.
Score 9
Severely obese. The animal's mobility may be impaired by excessive fat.
