Atomic number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
Mass number
The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
Relative atomic mass
An average value that takes account of the abundance of the isotopes of the element.
Metal
An element that reacts to form a positive ion.
Non-metal
An element that does not form a positive ion when it reacts.
Ion
A particle with an overall charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.
Electron shell/energy level
Where electrons are located. These shells surround the nucleus.
Malleable
This is the ability of a substance to be bent.
Ductile
This is the ability of a substance to be stretched out without easily breaking.
Brittle
This is when a substance breaks apart easily.
