Evolution
The process of change that has transformed life on Earth, characterized as descent with modification from common ancestors.
Biology
The scientific study of life.
Biological Organization
The hierarchical structure of life studied across ten successive levels: 1 Biosphere, 2 Ecosystems, 3 Communities, 4 Populations, 5 Organisms, 6 Organs, 7 Tissues, 8 Cells, 9 Organelles, 10 Molecules.

Emergent Properties
New properties that arise at each successive level of biological organization due to the arrangement and interactions of parts within a complex system.
Reductionism
An approach in biology that reduces complex systems to simpler components that are more manageable to study in isolation.
Systems Biology
An approach that models the dynamic behavior of whole biological systems based on the analysis of interactions among its constituent parts.
Eukaryotic Cell
A cell type containing membrane-enclosed organelles, including a prominent membrane-enclosed nucleus containing its DNA.

Prokaryotic Cell
A simpler, usually smaller cell type characteristic of bacteria and archaea that lacks a nucleus or other membrane-enclosed organelles.
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid)
The genetic material contained in chromosomes, structured as a double helix composed of four chemical building blocks called nucleotides: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T).
Gene
A unit of inheritance consisting of a specific segment of DNA that encodes information for building cellular molecules.
Gene Expression
The multi-step process by which information encoded in a gene directs the synthesis of a cellular product, typically by transcribing DNA into mRNA and translating it into a protein.
Genomics
The large-scale study of whole sets of genes and their interactions within one or more species.
Genome
The entire library of genetic instructions that an organism inherits.
Proteomics
The study of sets of proteins and their properties.
Proteome
The entire set of proteins expressed by a given cell, tissue, or organ.
Bioinformatics
The use of computational tools to store, organize, and analyze large volumes of biological data.
Producers
Organisms, such as plants and other photosynthetic organisms, that generate chemical energy from sunlight.
Consumers
Organisms that obtain chemical energy by feeding on other organisms or their remains.
Ecosystem Energy Flow and Chemical Cycling
The ecosystem pathway where energy flows one-way (entering as light and exiting as heat), whereas chemical nutrients cycle and are recycled within the system.

Feedback Regulation
A self-regulating mechanism in biological systems where the product or output of a process regulates that very process.

Negative Feedback
The most common form of biological regulation, in which the end response reduces or diminishes the initial stimulus.
Positive Feedback
A form of biological regulation in which an end product accelerates or speeds up its own production.
Climate Change
Directional change to the global climate lasting for three decades or more, encompassing global warming, altered wind and precipitation patterns, and increased severe weather events.
Domain Bacteria
One of the three domains of life, consisting of single-celled prokaryotic organisms.
Domain Archaea
One of the three domains of life, comprising prokaryotes distinct from bacteria.
Domain Eukarya
The domain of life comprising all eukaryotic organisms, including kingdom Plantae, kingdom Fungi, kingdom Animalia, and protists.
Natural Selection
An evolutionary mechanism proposed by Charles Darwin in 1859, where environment selects for individuals with advantageous inherited traits, causing unequal reproductive success.
Evolutionary Tree
A treelike diagram illustrating proposed ancestral relationships and descendants among species over evolutionary time.

Inquiry
The search for information and explanations regarding natural phenomena.
Data
Recorded observations upon which scientific inquiry relies.
Qualitative Data
Scientific data recorded in the form of verbal or visual descriptions rather than numbers.
Quantitative Data
Scientific data expressed as numerical measurements, typically arranged in tables or graphs.
Inductive Reasoning
A logical process where general principles are derived from a large set of specific observations.
Deductive Reasoning
A logical process in which specific predicted results are deduced from general premises.
Hypothesis
An explanation grounded in observations and assumptions that leads to a testable prediction.
Controlled Experiment
An experiment designed to compare an experimental group against an unmanipulated control group under identical conditions.
Independent Variable
The factor in an experiment intentionally manipulated or changed by researchers.
Dependent Variable
The factor measured in an experiment that is predicted to change in response to the independent variable.
Theory
A broad, comprehensive explanation in science that generates multiple new testable hypotheses and is supported by an extensive body of evidence.
Model Organisms
Species selected for intensive scientific research (such as the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster) to facilitate data sharing and comparative studies.
Technology
The application of scientific knowledge for practical or specific human purpose.
