Breaching
Rising out of the water and coming down with a great splash, a behavior seen in humpback whales.
Conformist bias
The tendency of humans or animals to follow common behavior, such as sparrows picking up more common songs rather than rarer ones.
Famine
A situation in which large numbers of people have little or no food.
Cognitive scientist
A researcher who studies the processes in the brain related to knowing, learning, and understanding.
Intangible cultural heritage
Living cultural traditions, such as music, dance, regional cuisines, and craft-making, rather than physical buildings or monuments.
Blast fishing
An illegal technique that involves setting off bombs in the water to kill as many fish as possible.
Cyanide fishing
An illegal fishing method where fishermen release liquid cyanide into a reef to stun fish for easy collection.
Coral bleaching
A process in which elevated water temperatures cause living coral reefs to turn white.
Essence
In perfume making, a natural or synthetic material that possesses its own distinctive aroma.
Adolescence
The time during which children slowly develop and grow into adults.
Sump
A passage inside a cave system that is filled with water.
Pit
An area within a cave that drops straight down.
Kaffemik
A traditional community gathering in Greenland used for social interaction and debating issues.
Embalmers
Individuals who prepare a dead body for burial.
Venn diagram
A visual tool used to compare two or more subjects by displaying their similarities and differences.
