Prefabricated and Modular Construction

Prefabrication  -  a  construction  method  where building  components  are  manufactured  in  a factory  or  controlled  environment  before  being transported to the construction site for installation.

Modular construction - a type of prefabrication in which  complete  building  sections  (modules)  are produced off-site and assembled on-site.

2
New cards

BASIC PRINCIPLES OF PREFABRICATED AND MODULAR CONSTRUCTION

  • Off-site manufacturing

  • Standardization of components Quality-controlled production

  • Transportation and on-site assembly

  • Improves quality through factory-controlled production

  • Minimizes material waste

  • Reduces labor requirements on-site

  • Enhances worker safety

  • Less affected by weather conditions

  • Supports sustainable construction practices

3D PRINTING IN CONSTRUCTION

also  known  as  construction additive manufacturing, is a modern building technology that creates structures by depositing construction materials layer by layer using a digital design. It uses automated robotic  systems  to  build  walls  and  other  structural components  with  high  precision,  reducing  construction time, labor requirements, and material waste while allowing more  complex  and  customized  designs  than  traditional construction methods.

6
New cards

BASIC PRINCIPLES OF 3D PRINTING IN CONSTRUCTION

  • Uses a digital 3D model (CAD or BIM) as the blueprint.

  • A robotic printer deposits construction material layer by layer.

  • Each layer is precisely placed and allowed to harden before the next layer is added.

  • The process continues until the entire structure is completed with minimal manual intervention.

SLIP FORMING

Definition & Principles:

Continuous pouring of concrete into a formwork that constantly moves upwards.

Significance & Benefits:

Eliminates horizontal cold joints, creating a highly durable, monolithic structure.

10
New cards

JUMP FORMING

Definition & Principles:

Formwork moves upward in discrete, incremental steps. Concrete is poured, cures, and then the form "jumps" to the next level.

Significance & Benefits:

An efficient method for tall structures that avoids the logistical strain of a 24/7 continuous pour.

11
New cards

TUNNEL FORMING

Definition & Principles:

A highly mechanized system using inverted steel "L" or "U" forms to cast walls and floor slabs simultaneously.

Significance & Benefits:

Brings factory-style mass production to the site, yielding highly rigid, earthquake-resistant cellular structures.

12
New cards

APPLICATIONS OF SLIP FORMING

  • Silos

  • Tall bridge piers

  • Cooling towers

  • Elevator shafts

  • Offshore oil platforms

How to use it?

A starter ring of formwork is assembled on the foundation. Hydraulic jacks are attached to a series of vertical jack rods embedded in the concrete. As the concrete is continuously poured, the hydraulic jacks uniformly raise the entire formwork assembly, working platform, and scaffolding at a rate of roughly 150 to 300 mm per hour.

13
New cards

APPLICATIONS OF JUMP FORMING

  • Sheer walls

  • Stairwells

  • Bridge pylons

  • Core walls of high-rise skyscrapers

How to use it?

Formwork is secured to the previously poured and cured concrete section below. A new lift of concrete is poured and left to cure. Once cured, the forms are stripped back, and the entire assembly is hoisted up to the next level using a crane (crane-climbed) or built-in hydraulic or mechanical jacks (self-climbing).

14

APPLICATIONS OF TUNNEL FORMING

  • Mass housing

  • Prisons

  • Hotels

  • Repetitive cellular room layouts

How to use it?

The  large  steel  half-tunnels  are  craned  into  position  and  locked  together. Reinforcement steel is placed, and concrete is pumped into the walls and over the top  slab  simultaneously.  Often,  built-in  heating  elements  cure  the  concrete overnight. The next day, the forms are collapsed slightly and pulled horizontally out of the newly cast "tunnel" to be craned to the next section.

TOP-DOWN CONSTRUCTION

A construction method where the building is constructed from the ground level downward instead of excavating the entire basement first. The basement floors are built while excavation continues, and the upper floors are constructed simultaneously.

20
New cards

BOTTOM-UP CONSTRUCTION

A conventional construction method where the entire basement is excavated before construction begins. Basement floors are constructed from the lowest upward to the construction above the ground.
