Dementia
Umbrella term describing a syndrome linked to over 100 different diseases, characterized by impairment of multiple brain functions.
Alzheimer’s disease
Most frequent form of dementia, where 'plaques' and 'tangles' develop in the brain, leading to brain cell death.
Vascular dementia
Second most common type of dementia.
Delirium
A state of mental confusion due to disturbances in cerebral function.
Occupational Therapists
Professionals uniquely positioned to assess cognition and occupational performance, to intervene when necessary, and to enhance the quality of life for both the person with dementia and their family/caregivers.
Teamwork
Collaboration within a multidisciplinary team, with teams of community services, or even with family groups and within therapeutic groups; is crucial in occupational therapy.
Team
A set of interpersonal relationships structured to achieve specific goals, with members having distinct roles or functions.
Group
Two or more individuals who are aware of their membership within the group, of other members, and their interdependence in achieving mutual goals.
Forming
Lack of agreement on team aims, high dependence on the leader for direction, and members trying to establish their identity.
Storming
Purpose clarity increases, but decision-making is difficult. Members may compete for position, and the leader might be challenged.
Norming
Agreement begins on norms and practices. Roles and responsibilities become clear and accepted.
Performing
The team relies on established norms. Tasks and roles are clear, there's a shared vision, and disagreements are resolved constructively.
Adjourning
The team disbands, ideally after completing its task successfully.
Groupthink
Uncritical acceptance of ideas and suppression of alternative views, often in highly cohesive groups with strong leadership.
Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)
A rapid screening instrument specifically designed for mild cognitive dysfunction, assessing a range of cognitive domains.
Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS)
Short cognitive screening instrument which primary purpose is to minimise the effects of cultural learning and language diversity when assessing baseline cognitive performance.
