Embryology
Study of the early stages of development.
Comparative Anatomy
Compares anatomical similarities and differences between different animals.
Levels of Organization
The structural order from smallest to largest: Chemical/Molecular → Organelles → Cells → Tissues → Organs → Organ Systems → Organism.
Chemical/Molecular Level
The simplest level of organization, usually measured in nanometers (nm=10−9m).
Organelles Level
The level of organization formed by chemicals/molecules, which in turn form cells.
Cellular Level
The level of organization formed by organelles, usually measured in micrometers (μm=10−6m).
Tissue Level
The level of organization formed by groups of cells, usually measured in millimeters (mm=10−3m).
Organ Level
The level of organization formed by different tissues working together, usually measured in centimeters (cm=10−2m).
Organ Systems Level
The level of organization formed by multiple organs working together.
Organism Level
The most complex level of organization, usually measured in meters (m).
Four Major Tissue Types
Epithelial, Muscular, Neural, and Connective tissues (remembered by the memory trick EMNC).
Nanometer (nm)
A unit of measurement equal to 10−9m, typically used to measure at the Chemical/Molecular level.
Micrometer (μm)
A unit of measurement equal to 10−6m, typically used to measure at the Cellular level.
Millimeter (mm)
A unit of measurement equal to 10−3m, typically used to measure at the Tissue level.
Centimeter (cm)
A unit of measurement equal to 10−2m, typically used to measure at the Organ level.
Meter (m)
A unit of measurement typically used to measure at the Organism level.
