Socialist realism
An old-school, Soviet-style of making art. It basically means making movies or paintings that glorify the working class and promote socialist/communist ideals. Think: heroic factory workers and evil bosses.
Western cultural medium
A fancy way of saying "movies were originally a Western (European/American) invention."
Salient motif
A salient thing is something super noticeable or important. A motif is a repeating symbol. So, a salient motif is just a symbol that keeps popping up and hits you over the head with its meaning (like the tree in the passage representing life and death).
Archetypal predicaments
struggles are universally recognizable
Initiatory journeys
A quest or adventure (literal or mental) that forces a character to grow up, learn a massive lesson, and changes how they view the world. It’s their "initiation" into a new way of thinking.
Dialectical elements
This just means the clashing of two total opposites (like Good vs. Evil, Rich vs. Poor, or Power vs. Powerless) that fight it out to show a bigger truth.
Social context
background setting of society. It asks: What is it like to live in this world? Are most people rich or poor? Who has the power?
Social consciousness
Being "awake" to how society works. If a character has social consciousness, they realize that their struggles aren't just bad luck—they are caused by a rigged system.
Sociopolitical
A mashup of "society" and "politics." It just means looking at how the government and laws (politics) directly affect everyday people's lives (society).
