Magnesia

An island in Greece where magnetic ore deposits were found in 600 BC.

Lodestone (loadstone)

Also known as leading stone; a name given to magnetic material for its property of direction, used for navigation on ships.

Magnetism

The attractive and directive property of materials that allows them to attract small pieces of iron, Cobalt, etc.

Magnetic Poles

The ends of a magnet where magnetic properties are concentrated, defined by pole strength ($m$).

Dipole

A property of magnets showing that they always exist with two opposite poles and not as a monopole.

Directive Property

The characteristic of a freely suspended magnet to align itself towards the North-South (N-S) direction of the Earth.

Magnetic Induction

The process by which magnetic properties can be induced in other substances.

Interaction between Poles

The rule governing magnetic behavior where like poles repel and unlike poles attract.
