NIRSA
National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association; a higher‑education organization that advocates for recreation, sport, and wellness and provides educational opportunities, knowledge sharing, and networking for members.
NIRSA Mission
To lead in higher education and advocate for the advancement of recreation, sport, and wellness by providing educational and developmental opportunities, sharing knowledge, and promoting networking.
NIRSA Planning Points
Fourteen planning considerations used for planning new recreational centers, including demographics, projections by gender, housing proximity, campus population, commuters, business model, climate, storage, peak usage, new programs, and space for regional activities.
Climate
Weather conditions (hot, cold, wet, dry, hilly, etc.) that affect design and scheduling.
Peak time for users
Times of day when facility usage is highest.
Total indoor space
NIRSA recommended minimum: 20,000 square feet.
Total fitness equipment space
NIRSA recommended minimum: 3,000 square feet.
Group exercise space
NIRSA recommended minimum: 1,200 square feet.
Total outdoor field space
NIRSA recommended minimum: 6 acres.
Space Requirements
Types of spaces needed in a campus recreation facility: gym floor, mat areas, swimming pools, court areas, racquetball/handball, tennis/badminton, and sand volleyball.
5 steps for comparing with accepted standards
Five-step process: locate existing areas on campus, identify potential expansion areas, describe current/potential uses of each area, determine conversion costs, and assess availability by major users; compile supporting documents.
5 steps for proposal (page 240)
Five-step proposal: objectives of the study; trends nationally and on campus; problems from changing facility structure; recommendations for immediate action and long-term improvements; appendices with a campus map, space data, current versus potential uses, conversion costs, and use percentages.
Appendices (proposal)
Appendices – map of campus with marked areas including location, area square footage, space type, current uses, potential uses, conversion costs, and percentage of use.
Security issues
Security measures for campus facilities: outside lighting, cameras, alarmed doors, pool alarms, lockers, fire alarms, sprinklers, and appropriate signage; awareness of peak hours.
Prime time hours
Peak hours: 6–8 am, 11 am–1 pm, 4–6 pm, and 7 pm–midnight.
