Sensitive PII
Combination of data elements which, if lost, compromised, or disclosed without authorization, could be used to inflict substantial harm to an individual. (ex: medical records)
Nonsensitive PII
Information available in public sources; disclosure is not reasonably expected to result in personal harm. (ex: telephone number)
Data Broker
Company or individual that collects, aggregates, and sells personal information about consumers, often without their direct knowledge or consent.
Values
Beliefs of what is important and worthwhile (honesty, collaboration, creativity).
Morals
Codes of conduct governing behavior based on values (no lies, share ideas, open mind).
Ethics
A field of study that examines the 'moral' basis of human behavior and attempts to determine the best course of action in the face of conflicting choices.
Law
Rules of behavior, enforced by consequences for violating those rules.
Principle of Benevolence
Help those in need.
Principle of Paternalism
Assist others in pursuing their best interests when they cannot do so themselves.
Principle of Harm
Do no harm to others.
Intellectual Property
Creations of the mind, such as inventions, literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce
Patents
Ownership of an invention. Ex: Microsoft patented “double clicking” (2004)
Trademarks
Phrase, symbol, or design that distinguishes the source of products or services. Ex: Apple logo
Trade Secrets
Formula, process that gives one company a business advantage. Ex: Google search algorithm
Copyright
Legal right granted to the creator of original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical, and certain other intellectual works.
Reproduction Right
Only the copyright owner may make reproductions or copies of the work.
Distribution Right
Only the copyright owner may make a work available to the public by sale, rental, lease, or lending.
Public Performance Right
Only the copyright owner may perform a copyrighted work.
Public Display Right
Only the copyright owner may display a copyrighted work.
Digital Transmission Right
Only the copyright owner may transmit sound recordings by means of digital audio transmission

consider the extent to which an action produces beneficial consequences for another society
Principle of honesty:
do not deceive others
Principle of lawfulness:
do not violate the law
Principle of autonomy:
acknowledge a person’s freedom over his/her actions or physical body
Principle of justice:
acknowledge a person’s right to due process, fair compensation for harm done, and fair distribution of benefits.
Rights:
acknowledge a person’s rights to life, information, privacy, free expression, and safety
