At least one hand width below the greater trochanter.
Vastus lateralis inferior boundary
One hand width above the knee.
Ventrogluteal landmarks
The head of the greater trochanter and the anterior superior iliac spine.
Ventrogluteal hand placement (palm)
Placed on the head of the greater trochanter.
Ventrogluteal thumb positioning
Pointing toward the client's abdomen.
Ventrogluteal index finger placement
Extended up to the anterior superior iliac spine.
Ventrogluteal finger spread
Spread back along the iliac crest.
Ventrogluteal needle insertion point
The V formed between the index and third fingers.
Needle selection determinants
The site used, age and size of the client, and medication to administer.
Max volume protocol
If total volume exceeds the maximum recommended for a site, split the injection into two or more smaller injections at different sites.
Deltoid adult maximum volume
Up to 2mL of medication.
Deltoid needle length (average adult/adolescent)
1inch to 21inch needle.
Deltoid infant/toddler restriction
Do not use the deltoid site for infants and toddlers younger than 3 years.
Deltoid needle length (preschoolers/older children)

Vastus lateralis adult maximum volume
Up to 3mL of medication.
Vastus lateralis needle gauge (oil-based/viscous, adult)
18 to 25 gauge.
Vastus lateralis needle length (oil-based/weighted, adult)
5− to 1inch needle.

22 to 27 gauge.
Vastus lateralis needle length (aqueous, adult)
5− to 1inch needle.
Vastus lateralis infant volume (limit)
Up to 1mL.
Vastus lateralis infant needle length (standard)
1inch needle.
Vastus lateralis small infant volume (limit)
Up to 0.5mL.

1− to 12inch.
Vastus lateralis solution preference
Preferred site for administering irritating or oily solutions to clients of any age.
Intramuscular needle change protocol
If a needle was used to draw up medication, change it to a clean, dry needle for injection.
Reason for IM needle change
To prevent tissue irritation or damage.
