How do you start the preparation of a soluble salt using a titration
Use a pipette to measure alkali into a conical flask and add a few drops of indicator (phenolphthalein or methyl orange).
How is acid added to the alkali during titration
Add the acid to a burette, note the starting volume, then add it slowly to the alkali until the indicator changes colour.
How do you calculate the volume of acid used
Subtract the final burette reading from the starting volume of acid.
Why repeat the titration without indicator
To avoid contamination of the salt with indicator and produce a pure sample.
What do you do after neutralisation
Heat the neutral solution to partially evaporate water, leaving a saturated solution.
How are crystals formed from the solution
Leave the saturated solution to crystallise, decant excess liquid, and let the crystals dry.
Why is some water left during evaporation
To retain water of crystallisation in some salts and to prevent salt from overheating and decomposing.
