Raw materials for textiles
Textiles are made from fibers, which can be natural (organic) or synthetic (man made)
Natural fibers
Come from plants (cotton, linen) or animals (wool, silk)
Synthetic fibers
Produced chemically, often from polymers derived from oil, coal, glass or metal
Natural fibers N#2
Materials produced by plants or animals that can be spun into a thread, rope or filament. Properties:
- easy to dye
- flammable
- wrinkle easily
- prone to mildew (mold)
- dimensionally stable
- good conductor of electricity (don't build static)
- highly absorbent
Synthetic fibers N#2
Made from man made materials that are spun into a thread. Properties:
- resistant to mildew (mold)
- difficult to dye
- wrinkle resistant
- soften with heat
- can stretch or shrink
- low absorbency
Yarn
A long continuous length of interlocked synthetic or natural fibers
Knitting
A method for converting yarn into fabric by creating consecutive rows of interlocking loops of yarn
Weaving (тъкане)
The act of forming a sheet like material by interlacing long threads passing in one direction with others at a right angle to them
Lacemaking (плетене на дантела)
A method for creating a decorative fabric that is woven into symmetrical patterns and figures
Felting
A method for converting yarn into fabric by matting the fibers together
