Veins

• Blood goes toward the heart

• Thinner walls

• Valves to prevent back flow

• Deoxygenated Blood

Capillaries

• one cell layer thick walls

• mixture of deoxy and oxygenated blood due to gas exchange

Arterioles

• blood away from heart

• thinner but muscular walls

• valves are present

Venules

• collects blood from capillaries

• returns blood to heart

• thin and less muscular walls

• may have some valves

Jugular Vein

Brings deoxygenated blood from the head and brain to the heart

Carotid Arteries

• oxygenated blood

• away from heart towards brain, neck, face

Anterior (superior) Vena Cava

• collects deoxygenated blood from upper body

• delivers to right atrium of heart

Posterior (Inferior) Vena Cava

• Collects deoxygenated blood from lower body

• Returns to the right atrium of heart

Pulmonary Arteries

• Carries deoxygenated blood from right ventricle to the lungs

• Is the only artery that carries deoxy blood

Pulmonary Veins

• Carries oxygenated blood from lungs to left atrium of heart

• Only vein that carries oxygenated blood

Hepatic Vein

• Drains deoxy blood from liver into inferior vena cava

Hepatic Portal Vein

• Carries nutrient rich blood from digestive tract to liver

Renal Arteries

• Oxygenated blood

• Supplies kidneys with blood

Renal Veins

• Drains deoxygenated and filtered blood from kidney

• Blood goes into inferior vena cava

Coronary Arteries

• Branches off aorta

• Supplies heart muscle with oxygenated blood

Coronary Veins

• Removes deoxygenated blood from heart muscle

• Drains blood into right atrium

Aorta

• Largest artery in the body

• Carries oxygenated blood from left ventricle to the entire body

Systemic Circuit

• Carries blood to and from body tissues

• Left side of the heart is systemic pump

• Brings oxygenated blood to body; Body returns deoxygenated blood

Pulmonary Circuit

• in relation to lungs

• Deoxygenated blood goes to lungs; oxygenated blood reenters heart

• Right side of heart is pulmonary circuit
