Decomposition reactions

A single compound decomposes into two or more compounds

2
New cards

Decomposition of binary composition

The decomposition of a substance by an electric current is called electrolysis. Oxides of the less active metals, which are located in the lower middle of the periodic table, decompose into their elements when heated.

Decomposition of metal carbonates

Down the group the carbonates require more heating to decompose. The carbonates become more thermally stable down the group.

The Group 2 nitrates undergo thermal decomposition to the metal oxide, nitrogen dioxide and oxygen gas.

These compounds are white solids and brown nitrogen dioxide and oxygen gases are also given off when heated.

Decomposition of Metal Hydroxides

Metal hydroxides are a family of compounds of the form of a metallic cation  and of a hydroxide ( OH−) anions, and are often strong bases.

Some metal hydroxides, such as alkali metal hydroxides, ionize completely when dissolved.

Certain metal hydroxides are weak electrolytes and dissolve only partially in aqueous solution.

Decomposition of Metal Chlorates

Metal chlorates also decompose when heated.

In this type of decomposition reaction, a metal chloride and oxygen gas are the products.

6

Decomposition of Acids

Refers to the breakdown of acidic compounds into smaller molecules or ions.

Studying the ionization of acids in water, considering the factors influencing the extent of dissociation.

Single Replacement Reactions

Also known as a displacement reactions.

One element replaces a similar element in a compound.

A + BX —> AX + B

Or

Y + BX —> BY + X

Replacement of a Metal in a Compound by Another Metal.
