Frock Coat
general term for a man's coat with collar from 18th to 20th c. Must have a skirt portion = more common earlier 18th c. (justaucorps). 1780s – large buttons, tight sleeves, minimal skirt (more like tails). Back in fashion around 1815-1820
Tailcoat (cutaway)
Became popular in late 18th c. Front "cuts away" creating a slope toward the back (tails). Front waist got quite high and showed vest below (even when coat buttoned)
