HRmax
Maximal heart rate.
HRR
Heart rate reserve.
MET
Metabolic equivalent.
RPE
Rating of perceived exertion on a 6-20 scale.
VO2max
Maximal volume of oxygen consumed per unit time.
VO2R
Oxygen uptake reserve.
Very Light Intensity
Cardiorespiratory endurance exercise intensity classified by <30% HRR or %VO2R, <57% HRmax, <37% VO2max, and an RPE of <9.
Light Intensity
Cardiorespiratory endurance exercise intensity classified by 30−39% HRR or %VO2R, 57−63% HRmax, 37−45% VO2max, and an RPE of 9−11 (very light to fairly light).
Moderate Intensity
Cardiorespiratory endurance exercise intensity classified by 40−59% HRR or %VO2R, 64−76% HRmax, 46−63% VO2max, and an RPE of 12−13 (fairly light to somewhat hard).
Vigorous Intensity
Cardiorespiratory endurance exercise intensity classified by 60−89% HRR or %VO2R, 77−95% HRmax, 64−90% VO2max, and an RPE of 14−17 (somewhat hard to very hard).
Near-Maximal to Maximal Intensity
Cardiorespiratory endurance exercise intensity classified by ≥90% HRR or %VO2R, ≥96% HRmax, ≥91% VO2max, and an RPE of ≥18 (very hard to maximal).
Young Adult Absolute Intensity (20-39 yr)
Absolute exercise intensity measured in METs for ages 20-39: Very Light (<2.4 METs), Light (2.4−4.7 METs), Moderate (4.8−7.1 METs), Vigorous (7.2−10.1 METs), and Near-maximal to maximal (≥10.2 METs).
Middle Age Absolute Intensity (40-64 yr)
Absolute exercise intensity measured in METs for ages 40-64: Very Light (<2.0 METs), Light (2.0−3.9 METs), Moderate (4.0−5.9 METs), Vigorous (6.0−8.4 METs), and Near-maximal to maximal (≥8.5 METs).
Older Adult Absolute Intensity (\ge 65 yr)
Absolute exercise intensity measured in METs for ages 65 and older: Very Light (<1.6 METs), Light (1.6−3.1 METs), Moderate (3.2−4.7 METs), Vigorous (4.8−6.7 METs), and Near-maximal to maximal (≥6.8 METs).
