Administer Oral Tablets/Capsules
I read and interpret the veterinarian’s orders
I select the correct drug and concentration

Administering Aural Medication
I successfully administer the proper amount of medication into the ear canal, holding the ear pinna upright and administering the correct amount of medication without contamination
I massage the base of the outside of the ear canal causing a swishing sound from the medication moving around in the ear canal
I wipe away any solution that may have leaked onto the outside of the ear flap or hair
I use communicative ability, articulation, customer relations, and professionalism throughout this process
Administering and intramuscular injection
I select the proper site for administration
I direct the needle through the skin and into the muscle
I aspirate, if no blood is noted, I inject
I withdraw the needle and place it into the sharps container
I massage the area where the injection was give and praises the patient
I use communicative ability, professionalism, articulation, and customer relations throughout this process
Administering Ophthalmic Medication
I wipe away any discharge from the patient’s eye using a gauze sponge or cotton ball
I open the end of the ophthalmic medication
I use the index finger and thumb to pull the upper and lower lids apart to open the eyes
My thumb pulls the lower lid down and the index finger pulls the upper lid upwards
My other fingers may rest on the head of the animal
While resting the head holding the medication on the head of the patient, I apply the drops or ointment gently into the eye without touching the eye
counting each drop or applying the proper amount of ointment without contamination
I release the eyelid
I allow the animal to blink to move the medication throughout the eye.

Administering a subcutaneous injection
I lift the skin using the thumb and forefinger forming a triangle or tent with the skin
I insert the needle into the skin at the base of the tent or triangle parallel to the body
I aspirate, looking for any signs of blood entering the syringe
if no blood enters the syringe, I administer the injection
I withdraw the needle and place in the sharps container
I rub the injection site and praise the patient
