National Defense Act of 1935
Law that set the basis for Philippine national defense and required male college students to complete two years of military training.
National Service Law of 1980
Legislation that made national service compulsory for all Filipino citizens through Civic Welfare Service, Law Enforcement Service, and Military Service.
Republic Act 7077 (1991)
Suspended the 1980 National Service Law and introduced the modern Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program.
Republic Act 9163 (2001) – NSTP Act
Established the National Service Training Program, highlighting the civic and defense role of Filipino youth through three components in all higher-education institutions.
NSTP (National Service Training Program)
A program that builds civic consciousness and defense preparedness among the youth by fostering the ethics of service.
Three NSTP Components
1) Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) 2) Literacy Training Service (LTS) 3) Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS).
Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC)
Provides students with military education and training to prepare them for national defense mobilization.
Literacy Training Service (LTS)
Trains students to teach literacy and numeracy to schoolchildren, out-of-school youth, and other sectors in need.
Civic Welfare Training Service (CWTS)
Engages students in activities that enhance community welfare and quality of life.
Objectives of NSTP Components
Strengthen youth values, improve skills and knowledge, encourage community service, and promote responsibility for peace and development.
Dimensions of NSTP-CWTS
Safety & security, education, recreation & wellness, values formation & moral recovery, industry & entrepreneurship, care for health, and environmental awareness.
CWTS Service Activities
Projects addressing health, education, environment, entrepreneurship, safety, recreation, morale, and other social services through direct community involvement.
