What are the four phases of wound healing?

-Inflammatory

-Debridement

-Repair/proliferative

-Maturation/remodeling

When does the inflammatory phase occur?

begins immediately and lasts 3-5 days

What happens in the inflammatory phase?

Vessels constrict, platelets aggregate, fibrinogen and clotting factors form, neutrophils/macrophages clena up wound

When does the debridement phase occur?

Within a few hours

What happens in the repair phase?

Fibroblasts deposit collagen, collagen fills wound, new blood vessels form, granulation tissue forms, wound begins to contract after 1 weeks

What happens in the maturation phase?

remodeling of collagen fibers and scar tissue forms, wound gains strength

What are the main components of granulation tissue?

Fibroblasts along with vascular and endothelial cells that proliferate from established vessels

excessive granulation tissue (especially found in horses)

First intention healing

healing of a clean, uninfected, surgical incision that is approximated by sutures

second intention

larger wounds that cannot by opposed by sutures or wounds that are left for a long period of time and connot be closed

What decreases inflammation and delays wound healing?

Steroids
