Tourism
The activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than 1 consecutive year for leisure, business, or other purposes as defined by the UNWTO.
Tourist
A visitor who stays at least one night at the destination, distinguished from a same-day visitor or excursionist.
Inbound Tourism
International visitors arriving in the host country from abroad.
Domestic Tourism
Residents of a country traveling within their own country.
MICE Tourism
An acronym for Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions, which represents the highest-spending tourism segment.
Leiper's Tourism System
A theoretical model composed of three main components: the generating region, the transit route, and the destination region.
Eco-tourism
Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.
Carrying Capacity
The maximum number of tourists a destination can accommodate without causing unacceptable environmental or social impact.
DMO
Destination Management Organization; an entity responsible for the strategic planning, marketing, and development of a tourism destination.
Heritage Tourism
Travel motivated by the desire to experience the culture, history, arts, and architecture of places.
Sustainable Tourism
Tourism that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to enjoy the same resources.
OTA
Online Travel Agency; a digital platform such as Booking.com or Agoda through which tourists book travel services directly.
Malasakit
A term for Filipino hospitality or genuine concern for others, serving as a compelling tourism asset and a form of cultural diplomacy.
USD 1.9 trillion
The amount generated in export earnings by international tourism in 2019, making it the world's third-largest export category.
Daniel Burnham
The American architect who planned Baguio City in the early 1900s as a highland resort and summer capital.
PTA
The Philippine Tourism Authority, established in 1973 under Presidential Decree 189 during the Marcos administration.
