PreventionBiosecurity

• Maintain excellent hygiene.

• Isolate infected animals.

• Treat affected animals promptly.

• Avoid unnecessary animal contact.

• Remove and safely dispose of aborted material.

• Wear protective clothing.

• Minimise equipment entering farms.

• Use all-in/all-out management.

• Thoroughly disinfect housing before introducing new animals.

Poultry Control

Eggs may be treated with gentamicin before incubation to reduce vertical transmission in hatcheries.

Disinfection

Effective disinfectants include:

• Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) 2%

• Lime 3%

• Hydrogen peroxide 1%

• Peracetic acid 0.5%

• Chlorine compounds 4%

Vehicle disinfection is also important.

Aerosol Disinfection

Only suitable (unstable) disinfectants should be used.

Examples:

• Formaldehyde/formalin (approximately 3%)

• Peracetic acid preparations (e.g. Persteril 10%)

• Chlorinated lime (30–35%)

Application rates vary depending on whether animals are present.
