Good neighbor policy
1933-1945 Latin American policy pursued by the administration of the U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt, aimed at fostering friendly relations between the United States and Latin American Countries. Emerged as a response to a history of US military intervention (especially after the Spanish-American War). Instead, the government promoted trade agreements and economic assistance. It made sure Latin America could pay back debts. Good neighbor lasted until WWII- gives way to containment. Was challenged several times in relation to US involvement in cuba, eventually in 1934, the two agreed to remove the platt amendment. Was also challenged when Bolivia, Mexico, and Venezuela threatened to nationalize their oil industries in 1937 and 1938. After the war, when the CIA conducted a covert action to overthrow the democratically elected government of Guatemala in 1954, it the United States abandoned nonintervention in favor of military intervention to protect US companies and enforce containment.
