ANOVA
A hypothesis testing procedure that analyzes the components of the variance of a set of data.
Fixed Effects Model
Factor levels are specifically chosen; conclusion applies only to the factor levels considered.
Random Effects Model
Factor levels are randomly chosen; conclusion applies to the entire population of all factor levels.
ANOVA Table
A table that allows us to compute for our test statistic FO by comparing to a rejection region.
Sum of Squares (SS)
A component in the ANOVA table used to calculate the test statistic.
Degrees of Freedom (df)
A component in the ANOVA table, calculated based on the number of treatment levels and replicates.
Mean Square (MS)
Calculated as SS/df and used to compute the test statistic FO.
Test Statistic (FO)
Computed using MS values from the ANOVA table and compared to a rejection region to test the hypothesis.
Multiple Comparisons
Additional analyses conducted after ANOVA to determine which treatment levels are significantly different from each other.
Confidence Interval Method
A method to compare pairs of treatment means using confidence intervals.
Fisher’s Least Significant Difference (LSD) Method
Compares each difference in sample averages to an LSD value to determine if the difference between treatments is significant.
Tukey’s Studentized Range Statistic Method
Compares each difference in sample averages to a value to determine if the difference between treatments is significant.
