Most accurate picture of the earth; shows the true shape of land and sea.
Map Scale
A scale on a map that shows the relationship between map distances and real-world distances.
Latitude and Longitude
Two imaginary lines that pinpoint exact location on Earth.

Lines measured in degrees north and south of the equator.
Parallels
Lines of latitude.
Equator
0 degrees latitude.
Longitude
Lines measured in degrees that run east and west of the Prime Meridian.
Meridians
Lines of longitude.
Prime Meridian
0 degrees longitude.
International Date Line
180 degrees longitude.
Compass
A tool with a magnetic needle that points north.
Physical Maps
Show natural features such as landforms and bodies of water.
Political Maps
Show boundaries and areas created by humans.
Thematic Maps
Maps about a specific subject or theme.
Cartographer
A person who makes maps.
Hemisphere
One half of the globe.
