What are the general functions of the lymphatic system?
keeps body fluid levels in balance and defends the body against infections
How does lymphatic fluid flow from capillaries to the heart?
it goes through the left and right lymphatic ducts to the left and right subclavian veins
What is the right lymphatic duct?
it drains upper right quadrant of body
What is the left lymphatic duct?
it drains the remaining ¾ of the body
What are lacteals?
absorbers of lipid-soluble nutrients (fat)
located in the villi of small intestine
What are lymph nodes?
bean shaped organs containing macrophages (big eaters) and lymphocytes(white pulp tissue)
Where is the large collection of the lymph nodes?
> cervical
> axillary
> vertebral
> mesentery(intestines)
What is the spleen?
upper left quadrant of the abdomen
What is the white pulp tissue?
Lymphocytes+macrophages
What is red pulp tissue?
large venous sinuses(thin walled veins)
What are the additional functions of the spleen?
stores blood, destruction of worn out red blood cells(macrophages), production of erythrocytes in fetus
What is the thymus?
located in the middle of the chest/sternum, atrophies(shrinks) after puberty
What are tonsillar tissue?
pharyngeal tonsil (adenoid)
palatine tonsils(hard palate)
lingual tonsil(tongue)
lymphatic nodules of intestine (feyer’s patches)
What is lymphedema?
lymphatic illness
What are autoimmune diseases of the thymus?
lupus erythematosus
