futurist-
apocalyptic prophecies are yet to come
historist-
apocalyptic prophecies in flow of history
idealist-
apoc. proph. address spiritual realities (symbolic aspect of prophecy)
preterist-
apoc. proph. have been fufilled (fits into early church period)
positives of futurist-
clearest reading of apoc. lit (most literal)
positives of historist
if the events happen they’ll become history (always partially correct)
positives of idealist-
avoids assigning text to people or events; reflects symbolism of scripture
positives of preterist-
more relevant to it’s audience
negatives of futurist-
must at some point become historist
negatives of historicist-
can’t see past your own time, so views are always changing
negatives for idealist-
ignores specific natures of many prophecies
negatives for preterist-
all prophecies are fufilled, so the prophecy is less relevant to us today
ecclectic view:
combination of the strengths of the hermaneutics- best view
weakness of ecclectic-
no agreement on how to combine all the views
millennium
1000 year reign of christ (rev 20)
historic premillenialism-
last days will decline until the great tribulation (God’s judgement) and satan will be bound. after the 1000 years, satan is released and there is a great battle of armageddon- satan and god’s enemies are destroyed and thrown into the lake of fire. then humanity will be judged before the great white throne (final judgement) and those who found the lamb’s book of life will live with God, and the others go to the lake of fire
dispensational premillenialism
awaiting the rapture of the church (pre-tribulational, mid trib., and post trib.), the great tribulation (redeem people in israel), return of christ, and his 1000 year reign in jerusalem. after that, same view as historic
postmillenialism
gospel goes to all nations, and God’s power will have a positive effect on all people and usher a golden age(they see attacks against church, but get stronger). at some point the effect will bring in the milennial kingdom of christ (post mil dont know if its literal 1000 yrs or not). satan will be bound while christ reigns through the church. after the reign, christ returns, satan is released, and the battle and judgement (historic premil) happen.
amilennialism
no 1000 year reign, apoc. proph. is symbolic, christ is ruling and satan is bound currently. they await the return of christ and a final judgement- believers have eternity with god, nonbelievers go to lake of fire
what do all 4 views agree on
awaiting the return of christ and final judgement; those who have the lamb’s book of life live with God, others go to lake of fire.
amilennial: hermaneutical framework? literal or symbolic? when is milennium? when will christ return?
preterist, symbolic, we are in milennium, and the end before judgement he will return
postmillennial: hermaneutical framework? literal or symbolic? when is milennium? when will christ return?
historicist, either, church will usher in millennium, after the millennium before judgement day he will come
historic premillennial: hermaneutical framework? literal or symbolic? when is milennium? when will christ return?
futurist, more literal, in the future after great tribulation (no rapture), after tribulation before millennium
dispensational premillennial: hermaneutical framework? literal or symbolic? when is milennium? when will christ return?
futurist, very literal, after rapture and great tribulation, in the air at rapture, again to rarth after tribulation before millenium
what are the 3 primary ways israel is viewed in relation to church?
israel and church are distinct, israel is completed in the church, and israel is replaced by the church.
dispensational premil. view:
israel and church are distinct
historic premil (maybe postmil and amill) view:
israel is completed in the church
amill, many postmil, some historic postmil view:
israel is replaced by the church
