Symbolic Interactionism

A perspective that explains people develop their identity through social interaction.

Looking-Glass Self

The idea that people develop their identity based on how they think others see and judge them

Primary Deviance

The initial act of rule-breaking that does not define a person's identity

Secondary Deviance

Offending that occurs after a person internalises a deviant label

Dramatization of Evil

The idea that official reactions can turn minor misbehaviour into a lasting criminal identity

Moral Entrepreneurs

Powerful individuals or groups who influence what society defines as deviant

Selective Labelling

The idea that some people are more likely to receive criminal labels than others because of power, status or visibility

General Strain vs Labelling

General Strain: Crime results from strain.
Labelling: Crime results from social reaction.
