Gaussian surface
An imaginary surface through which flux is calculated to apply Gauss's law.
Electric flux (ΦE)
A measure of the number of electric field lines passing through a given area.
Electric potential (V)
The amount of work needed to move a unit charge from a reference point to a specific point inside the field without producing any acceleration.
Escape speed
The minimum speed needed for an object to break free from the gravitational attraction of a massive body.
Capacitance (C)
The ability of a system to store charge per unit voltage.
Significant figures (sig. figs.)
The digits in a number that are important in terms of accuracy or precision.
Partial credit
Points awarded for correct parts of a solution in problems where the answer is partially correct.
Electrostatic potential energy
The work done to assemble a system of charges from infinity.
Point charge
An idealized model of a charged object with negligible size, allowing the use of Coulomb's law.
Sign convention
The agreed-upon rules for assigning positive or negative values to physical quantities.
