Assessing existing wireless spectrum use before or during deployment to choose optimal channels and placement.

Heat map

Visual representation of signal strength across a physical space, room by room.

Wireless survey tools

Software showing SSIDs, BSSIDs, channels, bands, and signal details in the area, used for coverage and interference troubleshooting.

BSSID

The MAC address identifying a specific access point, as distinct from SSID, the network name.

Spectrum analyzer

Tool showing all signals on a frequency regardless of source, detecting non-Wi-Fi interference too.

MDM (Mobile Device Manager)

Central tool to manage mobile devices: push policies, control features by location, enforce screen locks, manage segmentation.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)

Employee-owned device used for both personal and work purposes, managed by the org's MDM.

COPE (Corporate Owned, Personally Enabled)

Company purchases and owns the device, assigns it to an employee, who may also use it personally.

CYOD (Choose Your Own Device)

Corporate-owned device model where the employee selects from a company-approved list.

BYOD vs COPE vs CYOD

BYOD: employee owns and chooses. COPE: company owns and chooses. CYOD: company owns, employee chooses from an approved list.

Segmentation (mobile, reinforced)

Corporate and personal data kept in separate partitions on the device; admin can wipe the corporate partition without touching personal data.

BYOD control limitation

The company cannot fully manage a device it doesn't own, which is why partition-based segmentation is the compromise used instead of full device control.

Cellular network / cells

4G/5G networks divided into geographic cell areas, the origin of the term cell phone.

On-path attack (Wi-Fi context)

Attacker positioned within range intercepts or sits in the middle of wireless traffic.

Wireless DoS (interference)

Attacker causes RF interference in the same frequency range, denying legitimate use of the wireless network.

PAN (Personal Area Network)

Short-range wireless network type; Bluetooth is the classic example.

Bluetooth pairing process

Formal handshake, using a PIN, required before two Bluetooth devices connect, preventing unauthorized or automatic connections.
