Who were the defendants ?
Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, two Italian immigrants and anarchists, were accused of the murder of two men during an armed robbery of Slater and Morrill Shoe company of South Braintree in Massachusetts where they stole 15k$ in 1920.
Who was the judge at the trial?
Judge Webster Thayer who was extremely biased, habit of convicting left-leaning defendants.
Who were Sacco and Vanzetti ?
Italian immigrants and anarchists who had strong oppositions to WWI and dodged the draft but who had no previous criminal record.
Why did the judge convict them despite lack of evidence ?
He convicted them based on 'consciousness of guilt' and he ignored new evidence indicting Celestino Medeiros who confessed to the murder.
What was the aftermath of their trial ?
Sacco and Vanzetti were executed in the electric chair on August 23 1927.
August 27 funeral with 50K attending.
Their case had attracted a lot of media and press attention, many protests took place, a symbol of the anti-Italian, anti-immigrant and anti-anarchist sentiments of the era.
