Economic Imperialism

Economic dominance achieved through financial means rather than military force.

Poppy Plant

A plant from which opium and opiates are derived.

Heroin

A highly addictive drug derived from opium.

Opium Wars

Wars fought between Great Britain and China over the opium trade, resulting in China being forced to buy opium.

British Firms

Financed and controlled the Port of Buenos Aires in Argentina.

Enclaves

Refers to communities where migrants of the same nationality live near each other, sharing language, religion, and culture.

Temporary Migration

Migration where people move temporarily for work, such as British engineers working on projects around the world.

Permanent Migration

Migration where people move permanently to a new place.

Indentured Servitude

A system of labor where individuals are contracted to work for a period, often under abusive conditions, to pay off a debt or obligation.

Sharecropping

A system of labor after the abolition of slavery where workers farm land in exchange for a share of the crop, often leading to a cycle of debt and exploitation.

Child Mortality Rate

The rate of children dying, particularly in situations such as plantations where there was little or no child care.

Maternal Mortality Rate

The rate of women dying, particularly in situations such as plantations where women worked until they went into labor and returned soon after giving birth.

Chinese Exclusion Act

An act passed in the United States that prevented Chinese laborers from immigrating to America

Acculturation

The process of being forced to adopt a new culture.

Assimilation

The process of choosing to adopt a new culture.
