CA-MRSA
Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus; can develop resistance through exposure to soil bacteria.
Nitrate reduction
Microbial reduction of nitrate (NO3−) to nitrite (NO2−) or further nitrogen species.
Durham tube
Inverted capillary tube placed in broth to trap gas and detect gas production during nitrate reduction or fermentation.
Fermenter
Organism that ferments sugars to produce gas; its activity can affect nitrate reduction interpretation.
Nitrite
NO2−; product of nitrate reduction that is detected by the A+B reagents.
Nitrous acid
HNO2; acid formed when nitrite reacts with reagents, producing the red coloration.
NH3, NO, N2O
Possible end products of nitrate reduction that may yield no color in this assay (ammonia, nitric oxide, nitrous oxide).
