Suspensory ligament
A ligament that helps hold the lens of the eye in place.
Peripheral Nervous System
The part of the nervous system outside the brain and spinal cord.
Cornea
The transparent front part of the eye that covers the iris and pupil.
Iris
The colored part of the eye that controls the size of the pupil.
Pupil
The opening in the center of the iris that allows light to enter the eye.
Receptor
A sensory nerve ending that responds to stimuli.
Pain receptor
A type of receptor that responds to damaging or potentially damaging stimuli.
Taste receptor
A sensory receptor for taste, located on the tongue.
Vitreous humour
The gel-like substance that fills the eye between the lens and the retina.
Ciliary muscle
Muscle that controls the shape of the lens in the eye.
Blind spot
The part of the retina where there are no light receptors, leading to a lack of vision in that area.
Medulla oblongata
The part of the brain that controls involuntary functions such as breathing.
Voluntary action
A conscious action performed by an individual.
Involuntary action
An automatic action that is not under conscious control.
Eustachian tube
A tube that links the throat and middle ear and helps equalize pressure.
Choroid
The middle layer of the eye, containing blood vessels that nourish the retina.
Retina
The light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the inner eye.
Optic nerve
The nerve that transmits visual information from the retina to the brain.
Sclera
The white outer layer of the eyeball.
Aqueous humour
The clear fluid in the front part of the eye.
Touch receptor
A receptor that responds to pressure and touch.
Pressure receptor
A receptor that responds to changes in pressure.
