Algebraic Expressions
Mathematical phrases that combine numbers, variables, and operational symbols.
Distributive Property
A property that states a(b + c) = ab + ac.
Evaluating Expressions
Substituting values for variables in expressions to find their numerical value.
Linear Equations
An equation that makes a straight line when graphed.
Inequalities
Mathematical statements that compare expressions to show that one is greater than or less than another.
Systems of Linear Equations
Two or more linear equations involving the same variables.
Substitution Method
A method for solving systems of equations by replacing one variable with an expression.
Elimination Method
A method for solving systems of equations by eliminating one variable.
Graphing
The process of plotting points or lines on a coordinate plane.
Exponents
A mathematical notation indicating the number of times a number is multiplied by itself.
Radicals
An expression that involves a root, such as a square root.
Function Notation
A way to write a function that uses symbols like f(x) to represent the output of a function.
Domain
The set of all possible input values (x-values) for a function.
Range
The set of all possible output values (y-values) for a function.
Slope
The steepness of a line, calculated as rise over run.
Y-Intercept
The point where a line crosses the y-axis.
Transformations of Functions
Changes to the graph of a function, such as shifts, stretches, and reflections.
Arithmetic Sequence
A sequence of numbers in which the difference between consecutive terms is constant.
Geometric Sequence
A sequence of numbers where each term after the first is found by multiplying the previous term by a fixed, non-zero number.
Polynomials
An algebraic expression that contains one or more terms.
Factoring Polynomials
Breaking down a polynomial into simpler components that can be multiplied together.
Quadratic Equation
An equation of the form ax^2 + bx + c = 0.
Vertex of a Quadratic Function
The highest or lowest point of the graph of a quadratic function.
Axis of Symmetry
A line through a shape that divides it into two equal parts that are mirror images.
Quadratic Formula
A formula that provides the solution to a quadratic equation: x = (-b ± √(b²-4ac))/(2a).
Data Analysis
The process of inspecting, cleansing, transforming, and modeling data to discover useful information.
Scatter Plots
A graph that shows the relationship between two sets of data using dots.
Line of Best Fit
A straight line that best represents the data on a scatter plot.
Correlation
A measure of the relationship between two variables.
Causation
The action of causing something; the relationship between cause and effect.
Measures of Central Tendency
Statistical measures that describe the center of a data set, including mean, median, and mode.
Mean
The average of a set of numbers, calculated as the sum of the values divided by the number of values.
Median
The middle value in a list of numbers when they are arranged in order.
Mode
The value that appears most frequently in a data set.
Box Plot
A standardized way of displaying the distribution of data based on a five-number summary.
Histogram
A bar graph that represents the frequency distribution of numerical data.
Exam Tip: Review Formulas
Make sure to memorize key formulas relevant to algebra problems.
Exam Tip: Practice Problems
Regular practice can help recognize and solve a variety of problems.
Exam Tip: Show Your Work
Writing down steps can help prevent errors and may result in partial credit.
Exam Tip: Check Answers
If time allows, always revisit and check your work for errors.
Multi-Step Equations
Equations that require more than one step to solve.
