needs you to pick out points that are insightful and clearly explained, use short embedded quotes and explain the differences perceptively

tips:

  • read the question carefully - it will tell you what to look for

  • find a point of difference or similarity in the two texts

  • aim for 2-3 comparisons

  • comparative words e.g similarly, likewise, however, whereas

  • back up points with quotes

  • analyse what you’ve written - think, “what do these things lead you to believe”. state something that isn’t mentioned and is your interpretation

make sure you understand what the language technique is and what it does

tips:

  • remember that some of the language devices might be different as it is a non fiction text (tone of voice, opinions presented as facts, biased phrases, statistics and facts)

  • do answer the question first by deciding on 3-5 key words

  • use these key words to help you find examples to support your ideas

  • look for language techniques inside of those quotes and explain the effect

  • both low and high level techniques are worth exploring

not picking out obvious ways and thinking deeply about the similarities/ differences and how this contributes to their overall meaning. analysing language and structure techniques and how they impact the meaning (what does it show/ deeper what does it make the reader understand?)

tips:

  • do spend time on this question - it’s worth a lot of marks

  • the question will tell you to compare similarities or differences. don’t do both

  • compare writers methods such as tone, format of the text or the narrative

  • compare how these methods (language techniques and structure) help to present the writer’s viewpoints and perspectives

  • compare text A with text B in the same paragraph and repeat this 2-3 times

  • don’t leave this till last
