What is 20
Fat or adipose
The two major components of the integumentary system are
The cutaneous membrane or skin composed of epithelium and accessory structures
What are the five major functions of the integumentary system
Provide protection, regulates the temperature , synthesizes and stores nutrients, sensory reception, and excretes and secretes glands
Epidermis
Is the first layer of the skin and consists of stratified squamous epithelium. Contains 5 to 4 layers
Stratum Germinativum/ Stratum Basale
This layer is connected to the basement membrane which seperates the epidermis from the loose connective tissue of adjacent dermis
What is the function of the stratum germinativum
Forms epidermal ridges/fingerprints, contains melanocytes and is a layer where new cells are generated and begin to grow
Stratum spinosum
Layer where cells continue to divide and add to the thickness of the epithelium
Stratum granulosum
Consists of cells displaces from the stratum spinosum. Produces keratin and coats ksing and structures of hair
Stratum lucidum
Covers the stratum granulosum, the cells in this layer are flattened and densely packed and filled with keratin
Stratum Corneum
The layer that is on the surface of the epidermis consists of later of dead epithelial cells that are keratinized. The dead cells are connected by desmosomes
What are the two layers of the dermis
The papillary later and reticular layer
Papillary Layer
Consists of loose connective tissue that supports and nourishes the epidermis. Contains capillaries and nerves
Reticular layer
Consists of irregular connective tissue consisting of both elastic and collagen fibers.
How are hairs produced
They are produced by hair follicles
Sebaceous Glands
These are oil glands and produce large quantities of lipids as they mature
Sebum
Secreted from the sebaceous gland lubricating the hair and skin and inhibits the growth of bacteria
Apocrine Sweat Glands
Concentrated in areas like armpits, odorless sweat into hair follicles
Merocrine Sweat Glands
Releasing water sweat to cool the body
What are the function of nails?
Protect the exposed tips of fingers or toes. Covers an area of the epidermis (nail bed)
