Stages of the Phosphorus Cycle

Assimilation

Plants and algae assimilate inorganic phosphorus into their cells, and transfer it to other animals that consume them.

Mineralization

Process through which organic phosphorus in soil is converted into inorganic phosphorus with the help of soil microbes.

Sedimentation

When phosphorus-containing compounds from the bodies or wastes of marine organisms sink to the floor of the ocean, they form new sedimentary layers.

Geological uplift

Phosphorus-containing sedimentary rock may be moved from the ocean to the land. 

Weathering

Rain and weathering cause rocks to release phosphate ions and other minerals.
