Nematoda
A phylum of roundworms, including free-living and parasitic species, characterized by a primitive body cavity and a simple digestive system.
Cryptobiosis
A state of extreme hibernation where nematodes can enter a Lag phase and return to life when conditions become favorable.
Ecdysis
The process of molting in nematodes in which they shed their old cuticle and secrete a new one.
Pseudocoelom
A primitive body cavity found in nematodes, providing space for internal organs.
Sexual dimorphism
The condition where males and females of nematodes are morphologically different, typically with males being smaller.
Oviparous
Refers to organisms, like some nematodes, that lay eggs.
Viviparous
Refers to organisms, such as certain nematodes, that give birth to live young instead of laying eggs.
Molt stages
The four larval stages (L1, L2, L3, L4) that nematodes pass through before reaching adulthood.
Filarial worms
A group of parasitic nematodes transmitted by vectors, responsible for diseases like lymphatic filariasis and river blindness.
DALY (Disability Adjusted Life Year)
A metric used to assess the overall burden of disease, combining years lost due to premature mortality and years lived with disability.
