Longitude

Angular distance of a point on Earth’s surface, measured eat or west of the Prime Meridian or at zero degrees at prime meridian.

Latitude

measures from north to south of equator.

The combination parallels of latitude and longitude

Defined by Earth’s magnetic field.
-Moves over time
-used by compass

British established the 0 point for the prime meridian

Location relative to features on the earth’s surface

-Very straightforward length measured between 2 points.

Absolute Space

a contained location defined by a coordinated space.

Relative Space

locating defined by the past or previous places

Cognitive Space

How people perceive space through personal background, experiences, cultures, and age.

Places

Takes location and gives it meaning by social and cultural attributes
-Developed shared meaning

Sense of place

the feelings that people share based off of memories and symbols associated with the place

Intersubjectivity

Shared meanings among people. How people develop a “sense of place.”

Region

territories that organize human activity and thinking.

Formal Region

-clearly bounded territory
-often defined by legal or administrative boundaries

Functional Regions

-Fluid structure linked through flows of activity
-Linked by ideas, goods, people, and capital
-No crisp boundary
-A hub with connections and flow

Vermicular Region

-region by culture and identity
-subjective
-Geography extent varies by perspective
