ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)
The biological energy molecule produced by living organisms that is necessary to sustain life and perform cellular activities.
Autotrophs
Living organisms, such as plants, that are capable of producing their own energy molecules through processes like photosynthesis.
Heterotrophs
Organisms that cannot produce their own energy molecules and must rely on consuming other organic matter.
Asexual Reproduction
A form of reproduction used by unicellular organisms where a single cell splits into two without requiring sex organs.
Zygote
The single initial cell formed by the combination of a sperm cell and an egg cell, which develops into a multicellular organism.
Cytology
The branch of science focused on the study of cells.
Embryology
The study of early developmental events taking place between the formation of the first cell and roughly twelve weeks (three to four months).
Tissue
A group of similar cells working together to perform a specific common function.
Epithelial Tissue
One of the four primary tissue types that covers structures and surfaces; the skin is its prototype.
Connective Tissue
One of the four primary tissue types that connects structures together and provides structural strength, such as bones.
Muscular Tissue
One of the four primary tissue types specialized for producing internal and external body movements.
Nervous Tissue
One of the four primary tissue types responsible for communication, interaction, environmental awareness, and responsiveness.
Histology
The scientific study of tissues, including their structures and functions.
Organ System
A collection of organs working together toward a common goal or function, such as transport or excretion.
Control Systems
The nervous system and endocrine system, which modulate, influence, and control the activities of other organ systems.
Integumentary System
The organ system consisting of the skin and its accessory structures, including hair and nails.
Taxonomy
The scientific system of classifying and naming living organisms.
Microscopic Anatomy
The study of anatomical structures at the level of cells and tissues requiring magnification.
Gross Anatomy
Also known as macroscopic anatomy; the study of body structures visible to the naked eye.
Community
An ecological level of organization involving two or more different interacting populations.
Ecosystem
An ecological level consisting of interacting biological communities and their non-living physical environment.
Cell Theory
The foundational theory stating that all living things are made of cells, the cell is the basic unit of structure and function, and all cells derive from pre-existing cells.
Homeostasis
The physiological process by which a living organism maintains a stable, constant internal environment within a normal range.
Negative Feedback
The primary homeostatic mechanism (accounting for 95% or more of responses) where the body reverses or changes the direction of a stimulus to restore balance.
Positive Feedback
A homeostatic mechanism where the body responds to a stimulus by amplifying or increasing the stimulus until a specific outcome is achieved.
Oxytocin
A hormone involved in positive feedback that stimulates uterine muscle contractions during childbirth labor.
Prolactin
A hormone involved in positive feedback that stimulates milk production in response to breastfeeding.
Palpation
An examination technique used by anatomists involving touching or manipulating body structures to gather information about texture.
Frontal (Coronal) Section
An imaginary anatomical cut or plane that divides a body structure into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions.
Transverse (Horizontal) Section
An imaginary anatomical cut or plane that divides a body structure into superior (upper/cephalic) and inferior (lower/caudal) portions.
Sagittal (Median) Section
An imaginary anatomical cut or plane that divides a body structure into medial (axial) and lateral (appendicular) portions.
Regional Anatomy
The precise description of body regions using specific, unique terminology associated with particular organs or areas (e.g., nasal).
