Psychological Disorder
A condition involving harmful thoughts, feelings, and actions that are deviant, distressful, and dysfunctional.
ADHD
A psychological disorder marked by extreme inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, appearing by age 7.
Medical Model
The idea that psychological disorders have physical causes that can be diagnosed, treated, and sometimes cured.
DSM-5
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, used to classify and diagnose mental health conditions.
Anxiety Disorders
Disorders involving excessive apprehension and anxiety, including GAD, panic disorder, phobias, OCD, and PTSD.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Characterized by persistent, uncontrollable worry, autonomic arousal, and difficulty identifying the cause of anxiety.
Panic Disorder
Sudden, intense episodes of dread, including physical symptoms like chest pain and choking.
Phobia
An irrational fear of a specific object or situation that disrupts behavior.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Unwanted repetitive thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (compulsions) that cause distress.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Lasting trauma-related symptoms, such as haunting memories, nightmares, and social withdrawal.
Dissociative Disorders
Disruptions in identity, memory, or awareness, often linked to trauma.
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)
A disorder where a person exhibits two or more distinct personalities.
Mood Disorders
Disorders involving emotional extremes, including depression and bipolar disorder.
Major Depressive Disorder
Depressed mood lasting two weeks or more, not caused by drugs or medical conditions.
Mania
A hyperactive, wildly optimistic state characterized by impulsive behavior.
Bipolar Disorder
A mood disorder characterized by alternating episodes of depression and mania.
Schizophrenia
A disorder involving disorganized thinking, disturbed perceptions, and inappropriate emotions or behaviors.
Delusions
False beliefs, often involving paranoia or grandiosity.
Personality Disorders
Enduring, inflexible behavior patterns that impair social functioning.
Antisocial Personality Disorder
A disorder where a person lacks empathy, disregards others’ feelings, and may engage in criminal behavior.
