Zoology
The scientific study of animal life, covering biological areas such as taxonomy, physiology, behavior, evolution, and ecology.
Protoplasmic Grade
The grade of animal complexity characteristic of unicellular organisms (e.g., Amoeba, Paramecium) in which a complete organism performs all life functions using differentiated organelles.
Cellular Grade
The grade of organization in multicellular animals (e.g., Porifera) where cells are combined into larger units and differentiated for specific functions, exhibiting division of labor without independent cell existence.
Cell-Tissue Grade
The grade of body organization featuring an aggregation of similar cells into patterned layers (tissues) that perform a common function, such as the nerve nets and gastrodermis in Cnidarians.
Tissue-Organ Grade
The grade of complexity where tissues aggregate to form larger functional units called organs that perform specialized functions and consist of more than one kind of tissue (e.g., eyes and reproductive organs in Platyhelminthes).
Organ-System Grade
The grade of complexity in which multiple organs work together to perform a function as an organ system (e.g., circulatory, respiratory, or digestive systems), characteristic of most animal phyla.

Spherical Symmetry
A body form in which any plane passing through the center point divides the body into mirrored halves.

Radial Symmetry
A body plan that can be divided into similar halves by any plane passing through the central axis.

Bilateral Symmetry
A body arrangement where the body can be divided into two mirrored left and right parts along the sagittal plane.

Dorsal and Ventral
Directional terms in bilateral body plans where dorsal refers to the upper ('back') side and ventral refers to the lower ('belly') side.
Anterior and Posterior
Directional terms in bilateral body plans where anterior refers to toward the front and posterior refers to toward the back.
Proximal and Distal
Relative anatomical terms describing location: proximal describes a body part closer to a point of attachment than another, while distal describes a body part farther away from a point of attachment.
Transverse Plane
A cross-sectional anatomical plane that divides an animal's body into anterior and posterior portions.
Frontal Plane
An anatomical plane that divides a bilaterally symmetrical body into ventral and dorsal sections.
Sagittal Plane
An anatomical plane that divides the body into left and right halves.
Morula
An early embryonic stage consisting of a solid ball of cells produced by mitosis and cleavage of the zygote.
Blastula
An embryonic stage featuring a fluid-filled body cavity called a blastocoel enclosed by an outer layer of cells called the blastoderm.
Gastrula
An embryonic stage formed when one side of the blastula pushes inward, creating a depression that becomes the primary gut cavity (archenteron).
Archenteron
The primitive gut cavity formed within the gastrula during embryonic development.
Blastopore
The opening to the gut cavity created by the inward pushing of cells during gastrulation.
Protostomes
Animals characterized by spiral cleavage in early development, in which the embryonic blastopore becomes the mouth.
Deuterostomes
Animals characterized by radial cleavage in early development, in which the embryonic blastopore becomes the anus.
Diploblastic
Organisms (e.g., Cnidaria) that develop from only two germ layers: ectoderm and endoderm.
Triploblastic
Organisms that develop from three germ layers: ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm.
Ectoderm
The outer germ layer that differentiates into the brain, nervous system, skin, and other external structures.
Endoderm
The inner germ layer lining the gut cavity that differentiates into organs such as the colon, stomach, intestine, lungs, and liver.
Mesoderm
The middle germ layer in triploblastic animals that differentiates into muscles, gonads, connective tissue, cartilage, bone, and blood.

Acoelomate
A body plan in which mesodermal cells completely fill the blastocoel with a region of cells called parenchyma, leaving no body cavity surrounding the gut.

Pseudocoelomate
A body plan in which mesodermal cells line only the outer edge of the blastocoel, leaving two cavities: the blastocoel (pseudocoel) and the gut.
Schizocoely
The process of coelom formation in protostomes, in which mesoderm cells fill the blastocoel with a band of tissue that opens up in the center to form a true coelom.
Enterocoely
The process of coelom formation in deuterostomes, in which mesodermal cells grow out as pouches from the gut that eventually pinch off to form a true coelom.

Homology
Structural, developmental, or molecular sequence similarity attributable to a common origin and shared ancestry.

Homoplasy
Structural similarity between unrelated organisms resulting from convergent evolution under similar lifestyles rather than shared recent ancestry (e.g., wings in birds, bats, and insects).
Gradualism
The evolutionary theory proposing that phenotypic changes occur slowly and gradually over long periods, eventually accumulating to produce new species.
Punctuated Equilibrium
The evolutionary model proposing that speciation and morphological change happen rapidly, separated by long periods of stability.
Microevolution
Changes in allele frequencies within a population over time that alter traits (e.g., pesticide resistance, body size, or color) without forming new species.
Macroevolution
Large-scale evolutionary changes over long periods that lead to the origin of new species or higher taxonomic groups.
Natural Selection
The evolutionary mechanism consisting of two steps—generation of genetic/phenotypic variation followed by sorting—where favorable traits increase survival/reproduction and become more common in an environment.
Modern Synthesis (Neo-Darwinism)
The modern evolutionary framework connecting genetics with Darwinian theory, defining evolution as the change of allele frequencies in a population over time.

Genetic Drift
An evolutionary force caused by chance events that randomly change allele frequencies, such as an accident causing the loss of a rare allele in a small population.

Gene Flow
An evolutionary force involving the migration of alleles or individuals into, out of, or between populations.
Darwinian Fitness
An individual organism's ability to propagate its genes to subsequent generations.
Scientific Theory
An explanation of some aspect of the natural world that is thoroughly tested and supported by several lines of independent research.
Last Universal Common Ancestor (LUCA)
The hypothetical single ancestor from which all terrestrial life descended, estimated to have existed around 3.5–3.8 billion years ago.
Irritability
The property of life wherein organisms interact with their environment and respond to environmental stimuli.
Metabolism
The sum of all catabolic (destructive) and anabolic (constructive) chemical reactions in an organism used to maintain life by acquiring nutrients.
Shared Traits of Animals
The key defining traits shared by all animals: being eukaryotic (cells contain membrane-bound nuclei and organelles), multicellular, and heterotrophic.
