What is lateral recumbency?
The animal lies on their side, either on their left or right side
What is dorsal recumbency?
The animal lies on the back with the lower extremities rotated outward

Dorsal: Directed towards the back or uppermost surface
Ventral: Directed towards the belly or undermost surface
Medial vs Lateral
Medial: Directed towards the midline (median plane)
Lateral: Directed towards the midline towards the side
Cranial vs Caudal
Cranial: Directed toward the head/cranium
Caudal: Directed toward the tail
Anterior vs Posterier
Anterior: At the front
Posterior: At the back

Rostral: Directed towards the nose/beak

Proximal: Directed toward the torso (trunk)
Distal: Directed away from the torso (trunk)

Palmar: Directed toward the ground surface of the manus
Plantar: Directed toward the ground surface of the pes

ADaxial: Directed toward the longitudinal central axis of a limb
ABaxial: Directed away from the longitudinal central axis of a limb
Superficial vs Deep
Superficial: Toward the skin (outermost)
Deep: Away from the skin
