transport and deliver O2 and nutrients in exchange for CO2 and other wastes, and chemical messengers (hormones)
distribute body heat
defend against blood loss and disease
History
Greek physician Galen studied animal dissections and had thought the human heart only had two chambers that sucked blood from veins (rather as a pump) and blood sloshes back and forth in body
William Harvey dissected cadavers (humans) and discovered valves in the heart and veins direction flow in one direction throughout the human body
After Harvey’s death, Mercello Malphigi discovered capillaries, the connection to arteries and veins, confirming that a small volume of blood circulated to all parts of the body in a circulatory system
