History

  • Greek physician Galen studied animal dissections and had thought the human heart only had two chambers that sucked blood from veins (rather as a pump) and blood sloshes back and forth in body

  • William Harvey dissected cadavers (humans) and discovered valves in the heart and veins direction flow in one direction throughout the human body

  • After Harvey’s death, Mercello Malphigi discovered capillaries, the connection to arteries and veins, confirming that a small volume of blood circulated to all parts of the body in a circulatory system
