Roman general who commanded the invasion of Carthage in the second Punic War and defeated Hannibal at Zama (circa 237-183 BC)
Hannibal
Carthaginian military commander who, in the Second Punic War, attempted a surprise attack on Rome, crossing the Alps with a large group of soldiers, horses, and elephants.
First Punic War
Early Roman war with Carthage that led to Rome's conquest of the island of Sicily and Rome's rise as a naval power. Rome gets control of the sea
Second Punic War
Hannibal, a Carthaginian general, Crossed the Alps with over 50,000 troops with elephants. He wreaks havoc for 15 years, but loses the last battle, the battle of zama, and loses war. Scipio led the Romans, and destroys Carthage.
Third Punic War
Results in Carthages complete destruction - over 50,000 Carthaginians were enslaved.
Consuls
Two officials from the patrician class were elected each year of the Roman Republic to supervise the government and command the armies, elected by the centuriate assembly. (1 year term)
Tribunes
A representative of the plebeian class in ancient Rome chosen by the plebeians to protect their interests. Elected by tribal assembly.
Plebeians
Members of the lower class of Ancient Rome including farmers, merchants, artisans and traders
Patricians
Powerful landowners who controlled Roman government and society
Praetors
government officials who interpret the law and serve as judges (1 year tem)
Senate
A group of 300 men elected by the aristocracy to control foreign and financial policies and consult Consuls.
Centuriate Assembly
Citizen-soldiers who serve a life term. Each member has one vote and they elect consuls and make laws.
Tribal Assembly
Assembly in which members served life terms and organized by plebeians that elected tribunes and made laws for common people.
Legions
Large groups of Roman soldiers.
Twelve Tables
451 BCE. - First written code of laws for Rome. Protected all citizens under the law and was seen as an important victory for Plebian class. Displayed in the forum for all citizens to see.
Julius Caesar
100-44 B.C. Roman general who became the republic's consul and dictator in 45 B.C. He was assassinated by 60 members of the senate, because they felt he had too much power. His Assassination resulted in the fall of the empire
