Connective Tissue
The most abundant and widely distributed tissue type in the body, performing functions such as binding, support, protection, insulation, storage, and transportation.
Mesenchyme
The common embryonic tissue from which all classes of connective tissue arise.
Ground Substance
The unstructured material filling the space between cells in connective tissue, containing interstitial fluid, cell adhesion proteins, and proteoglycans.
Proteoglycan
A component of the extracellular matrix consisting of a protein core with attached large polysaccharides called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs).
Collagen Fiber
The strongest and most abundant extracellular matrix fiber, constructed of cross-linked fibrils that provide high tensile strength.
Elastic Fiber
A connective tissue fiber formed from a network of long, thin elastin proteins that allows structures to stretch and recoil.
Reticular Fiber
A short, fine, highly branched collagenous fiber that creates networks offering support and give within tissues.
Blast Cell
An immature, actively mitotic cell type that secretes the ground substance and fibers characteristic of a specific connective tissue matrix.
Cyte Cell
A mature, less active connective tissue cell primarily responsible for maintaining the health of the existing matrix.

Areolar Connective Tissue
A widely distributed loose connective tissue with a gel-like matrix containing all three fiber types, functioning to wrap and cushion organs, hold tissue fluids, and defend against infection.

Adipose Tissue
A loose connective tissue with closely packed adipocytes and minimal matrix, functioning in energy storage, thermal insulation, and shock absorption.

Reticular Connective Tissue
A loose connective tissue composed of reticular fibers in a gel-like ground substance that forms a soft internal skeleton (stroma) supporting free blood cells in lymphoid organs.

Dense Regular Connective Tissue
A tissue containing parallel bundles of thick collagen fibers and fibroblasts, providing high tensile strength in one direction to attach muscles and bones.
Aponeuroses
Flat, sheet-like tendons that attach muscles to other muscles or to bones.

Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
A connective tissue featuring thick, irregularly arranged collagen fibers that withstand tension exerted from multiple directions, found in the dermis and joint capsules.

Elastic Connective Tissue
A dense connective tissue rich in elastic fibers, allowing recoil after stretching in structures like large arterial walls and vertebral ligaments.

Hyaline Cartilage
The most common cartilage type, featuring a firm matrix with imperceptible collagen fibers that cushions and reinforces the ends of long bones, rib costal cartilages, nose, trachea, and larynx.

Elastic Cartilage
A cartilage type rich in elastic fibers that maintains structural shape while providing exceptional flexibility in the external ear and epiglottis.

Fibrocartilage
A compressible cartilage featuring alternating rows of chondrocytes and thick collagen fibers, functioning to absorb shock in intervertebral discs and knee joint menisci.

Bone (Osseous Tissue)
A hard, calcified connective tissue containing collagen fibers, osteocytes in lacunae, and a high degree of vascularity, providing support, protection, and mineral storage.

Osteon
The fundamental structural unit of compact bone tissue.

Blood
An atypical fluid connective tissue consisting of blood cells surrounded by a non-living liquid plasma matrix, functioning in the transport of gases, nutrients, and wastes.

Cutaneous Membrane
A dry organ membrane consisting of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium (epidermis) bound to an underlying layer of dense connective tissue (dermis).

Mucous Membrane
A moist membrane lining body cavities open to the exterior, consisting of epithelium lying over a lamina propria layer of loose connective tissue.

Serous Membrane
A moist, closed body cavity membrane composed of simple squamous epithelium resting on thin areolar connective tissue that secretes lubricating serous fluid.
Pleurae
The serous membranes that line the thoracic cavity walls and cover the lungs.
Pericardium
The serous membrane enclosing the heart.
Peritoneum
The serous membrane that lines the abdominopelvic cavity and covers its enclosed organs.
