Amphipathic phospholipids
Phospholipids possessing both water-loving (hydrophilic) and water-fearing (hydrophobic) properties, forming the cell's lipid bilayer membrane.
Nucleoid
The region inside a prokaryotic cell where its chromosome/DNA is located.
Plasmid
Circular extra pieces of DNA found mainly in bacteria that exist separately from the bacterial chromosome.
Ribosome
Cellular structure responsible for protein synthesis.
Inclusions
Structures inside a bacterial cell used for storing materials and nutrients.
Endospore
A highly durable structure formed by certain Gram-positive bacteria (e.g., Bacillus, Clostridium) during environmental stress to enter a dormant survival mode.
Vegetative Cell
The alive, active, and functioning form of a bacterium.
Sporulation
The process of forming an endospore for self-protection and survival, which is non-reproductive as it produces no increase in cell number.
Germination
The process of waking up from an endospore state and returning to active vegetative growth.
Gram-Positive Bacteria
Bacteria that stain purple, featuring a very thick peptidoglycan cell wall layer, thin periplasmic space, and teichoic/lipoteichoic acids.
Gram-Negative Bacteria
Bacteria that stain pink, featuring a thin peptidoglycan cell wall layer, an outer lipid membrane containing lipopolysaccharides and porins, and extensive periplasmic space.
Periplasmic space
The space located between the cell wall and the cell membrane.
Lipid A
An endotoxin component of lipopolysaccharide in Gram-negative outer membranes that causes toxicity when bacteria die and break apart.
Porins
Protein channels located in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria.
Protoplast
A Gram-positive bacterial cell whose cell wall has been completely removed.
Spheroplast
A Gram-negative bacterial cell whose cell wall has been temporarily removed.
Mycoplasma
A genus of naturally cell wall-less bacteria, known for causing walking pneumonia.
L-forms
Strains of regular bacteria that temporarily exist without a cell wall.
Magic bullet
A chemical treatment given to a host that harms target microbes without harming the host.

Spontaneous Generation
The disproven hypothesis that living organisms can arise spontaneously from nonliving material.
Biogenesis
The concept that living organisms arise only from pre-existing living organisms.

A experimental framework used in etiology to link specific pathogenic microbes to specific infectious diseases.

Pleomorphic
Refers to bacterial species that can naturally display various shapes.

A sugar-rich coating layer surrounding the cell membrane of virtually all cells.
Biofilm
A surface-attached community of microorganisms encased within a self-produced protective slimy matrix.
Axial Filaments
Endoflagella anchored at both ends inside spirochetes that rotate to produce spinning motility.
Helminths
Multicellular parasitic worms belonging to Kingdom Animalia that lack cell walls (e.g., pinworms, flukes, tapeworms).
Viruses
Acellular obligate intracellular parasites that contain either DNA or RNA (never both) and lack independent metabolic machinery.
Bioremediation
The environmental application of living organisms (bacteria or archaea) to clean up pollutants such as oil spills.
Virulence factors
Traits or molecules produced by pathogens that allow them to colonize hosts, evade immune defenses, and cause disease.
Epidemiology
The branch of medicine and microbiology that studies disease patterns and host defense in entire populations.
Archaea
Prokaryotic organisms representing the third domain of life, often living as extremophiles with atypical or non-existent cell walls and no known human pathogens.
Protozoa
Unicellular eukaryotic microorganisms lacking cell walls, mostly motile and heterotrophic, some of which are human pathogens.
Selective toxicity
